Excited to bring a continuous Urology service to Mackay Base Hospital. I have been working hard with the team here to innovate the way in which we deliver outpatient and surgical services to our vast catchment area of the Central coast Queensland.
Mackay base hospital has the only GreenLight laser available to perform laser prostate surgery for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and I am looking forward to offering this procedure to more patients over the year.
Kidney stone surgery remains a large burden on our patient population in Mackay and the hot climate makes this disease more prevalent. Here at Mackay Base and Mater Private we are providing a full range of comprehensive Kidney Stone treatment options of laser surgery. Coupled with the implementation of wide spread usage of dual energy CT scanning, we are diagnosing stones faster and with greater accuracy to help direct the best form of treatment.
Previous years has seen patients of Mackay with prostate cancer being sent to Brisbane for their surgeries and treatment. Obviously this has not been ideal for our patients and I am pleased that we are now able to offer this expertise locally. We have commenced our radical prostatectomy service and have a been working hard to ensure that our prostate cancer patients are attended to in a timely manner.
Moreover, Mackay Base Hospital is now the only centre in the region to offer transperineal prostate biopsy for the detection of prostate cancer. Not only is this far safer than transrectal ultrasound biopsies (TRUS), with a near ZERO infection rate, it allows for greater accuracy in sampling and targeting of suspicious lesions. I firmly believe that no man in Australia should be getting a TRUS biopsy performed on them and the arrival of our new transperineal prostate biopsy setup is allowing us to deliver world class standard of care to our patients in Mackay. I am working with the hospital executive to also bring this technology to the Mater Private Hospital and look forward to updating you all soon.
